Mage will be the favorite in the Preakness off of his impressive Kentucky Derby win. He has the stamina to cover the Preakness distance easily, and he is versatile enough to track the pace or close strongly. He can also keep his mind on business even if the race does not start well. However, the start will be more important in the Preakness than the Derby, with a bit slower pace likely.
The best bet in the Preakness is First Mission. The impressive winner of the Lexington, this Brad Cox trainee is bred to handle the stretch out to the Preakness distance. He also got a perfect outside post draw. As a stalker, he can get an absolutely perfect outside trip: a clean spot in range of National Treasure and Coffeewithchris, and then first run.
National Treasure adds blinkers, and should be the better of the pace horses. However, he has a penchant for finishing second or third, and appeals more for the underneath rungs. Blazing Sevens will take action just for being trained by Chad Brown, but he is a deep closer and he brings weaker form into the second jewel than Brown’s two winners of the race.
